Reading a Car Through Its Proportions

A car makes an impression before its badge becomes readable. The relationship between wheels, roof and body gives the silhouette its character. For a useful design exercise, set aside performance figures and describe only what you can see: where the cabin sits, how the roof ends and how much visual weight rests above each wheel.

Begin with a side view. Draw a simple rectangle around the whole car, then mark the wheels and the highest point of the roof. This rough sketch makes comparisons easier without requiring specialist drawing skills. Notice whether the shape feels upright, stretched, compact or deliberately formal.

Next, compare the side view with the front and rear. A strong impression from one angle may become quieter from another. Record those differences rather than trying to give every detail a score. The exercise is about sharpening your eye, not proving that one proportion is universally correct.

Finish with a sentence that describes the overall character. Repeating this method across several cars creates a personal visual vocabulary, one that is more precise than simply calling a design beautiful or unusual.
